Game Day Report: Devils at Leafs

Game Day Report: Devils at Leafs

If you are looking for something fun to watch this evening look no further than the Air Canada Centre.

Rookie of the Year candidate Nico Hischier and his New Jersey Devils wander into Toronto to take on Auston Matthews and his Toronto Maple Leafs.

While it is only Game #4 on the season for the Maple Leafs, there are plenty of fans, and media members, already beginning to look to the post season.

To that I say, enjoy the ride and remember each and every step but do not look passed the step in front of you.

The Devils have started the 2017-18 season undefeated with two wins in as many starts.

Goaltender Cory Schneider is once again looking like a legit top NHL goalie with an outstanding .955 Save Percentage and a 1.50 Goals Against Average.

The top pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, 18 year old Nico Hischier is already looking worthy of that honour.

While he only has one point on the season, he is a plus 3 and shows attention to detail at both ends of the rink.  He is creative, he is quick and he sees the ice very well, even in his early days in the NHL.

Will Butcher, drafted by Colorado, is a small defenseman who is already turning heads in the NHL.  Starting the season with 3 apples this 22 year old is one to focus on whenever he is on the ice.  Leafs better pay attention this kid tonite at the ACC.

The Leafs are walking with swagger after starting the season with three wins and no losses.

After an epic comeback against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night, it would be easy to let down against at less ‘sexy’ opponent in the middle of the week game.

Coach Babcock looks to lean on starter Frederik Andsersen again for this evenings contest.  The large framed Dane, is undefeated but his numbers are not what he nor the Leafs are looking for from their #1 netminder.   Andersen has a suspect .892 Save Percentage and a 3.28 Goals Against Average.

Keys to the Game:

Stay out of the box.   The new NHL is giving away penalty calls like its crappy candy on Halloween.

Do not get cute on the Powerplay.  Sure we are talented, but pepper the net and cash in on the garbage.

Minimize turnovers.  Again, do not try to over complicate the game.  Short, quick passes.

Help out Freddy.   Under siege at times, Andersen could use a little help from his friends.

Swedish Chefs.  Look for Calle Rosen and Andreas Borgman to get more comfortable in the Defensive Kitchen tonite.  They need to step up and keep those jobs they have been given.

So there ya have it.  Game Day at the ACC.
