The CBC: When a Montreal medical team pulled off the country’s first face transplant last spring, it was a historic moment for Canadian medicine, but the patient’s recovery remained far from certain.
Maurice Desjardins’s life since then has been full of setbacks, but he has so far avoided the worst-case scenario — his body’s rejection of the graft.
As Radio-Canada’s current affairs program Découverte reported last year, Desjardins was disfigured in a 2011 hunting accident. He was left with half of a face, as well as chronic pain and severe damage to the nerves, muscles and bones in his face.
His hunting accident face didn’t look too terrible. Coulda played Aquaman’s Dad in the sequel, but drinking your dinner, having people stare at you is no way to go through life.
Let’s be happy for Maurice. Whether he checked his shotgun staring down the barrel or it blew up in his face, you have to feel terrible for an active old fella like this. He’s not hunting or fishing anytime soon due to the transplant immunity meds he’s on, but at least he can proudly sit for a family portrait and his wife gets to get down with a brand new guy who’s way better looking than the last one.
Careful when you’re hunting in Canada. We don’t just have faces w a full set of teeth kicking around in the face drawer.
This was the first in Canada and hopefully not the last. Apart from always looking like he’s at a surprise party for himself, he looks pretty damn good if you ask me. Go get em, Maurice.
