The first of the four-game series did not go as planned for the Blue Birds. Brett Gardner led off the game with a double to right fielder and the Bronx Bombers never looked back. Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada lasted a dismal 3 2/3 innings, giving up 9 hits and 7 earned runs. He struggled to find his location early and often and the Yanks made him pay.
Gary ‘don’t call me Dirty’ Sanchez took him yard twice. Now that Sanchez is healthy and batting in front of Super Rookie Aaron Judge, this Yankees lineup is big, it’s deep, and it’s dangerous. Aaron Hicks slugged 3 doubles for 6 RBI’s. Have yourself a day, kid.
Charsten Charles Sabathia Jr. pitched well. He kept the Blue Jays off-balanced, and used both sides of the plate. Here is some food for thought, no pun intended… Sabathia ranks 4th all time in strikeouts by left-handed pitchers. Who knew? I would have guessed maybe top 10, but yes, 4th all time.
What else was there to see?
Not Devon Travis apparently. I know he doesn’t hit well, or at all for that matter against Sabathia, but come the fuck on. He has never faced Sabathia this hot. He just had a historic month. I am talking the most doubles by second basemen in a month since like, 1928. For what it’s worth, he is a bit banged up and could use some rest. But to me, it’s the first game of a huge series for the club. Set the tone, field your very best line up, and have at ’em. Instead, Darwin Barney boots a double-play ball in the first inning, and the Yanks take advantage.
Also absent was Russell Martin. He is also a bit banged up after a serious Donkey Cut of a swing and miss in yesterday’s game vs the Reds. His replacement Luke Maile cannot hit, but on this night, he couldn’t call a good game early on either. He was calling too many change-ups and Pete Walker was seen in between innings asking for an explanation.
Look for the 1-A Blue Jays lineup to do some damage against Yankee’s starter Michael Pineda. Francisco Liriano returns from the DL, be curious to see if he can get his slider over for strikes. If he doesn’t, it is going to be a long day for Franky and the Blue Birds.
