This past weekend was the 20th anniversary of the release of The Mess that was Menace. Let that sink in a bit… 20 fecking years ago!
I remember the lead up to it. It was going to be this epic thing… the hype was intense. We waited through so many years for some new Star Wars movie content.. waited through the CGI candy explosion that was the Special Editions.
Then finally it was here. It had…
- Scrolling text about taxation and trade federations…. ummm, ok.
- Young Anakin Skywalker, who had the charisma of a door. I mean, c’mon George. What did you do… take the audition list for Home Alone and hire the LAST PLACE fecking actor?
- And then there was Jar. Jar. Binks….. don’t get me started… that’s a whole other post.
It wasn’t all shit.
The teaser poster remains a brilliant piece of literal foreshadowing:
Darth Maul didn’t do much, he didn’t say much but he was probably the most BadAss looking of bad guys in the entire series. The dude was no Vader though.
The ‘Duel of the Fates’ was a finely choreographed three way fight set to some of John Williams most epic soundtrack moments. Let’s be honest, seeing Liam Neeson wielding a Light Sabre is worth the price of admission alone.
I was always a bit MEH about the Pod Race, but in a movie with so little exciting action at least it was something.
So, how or what, do you ask does all this have to do with motivations on this Monday of Mondays? Well, if you haven’t seen it there is a series of YouTube videos from Red Letter Media that poke fun of the Mess that is Menace. Whenever I need a pick me up I watch some of these videos. Trust me they are hilarious… and very accurate in their relentless bashing of the Mess. Their take on the Phantom Menance, as narrated by a strange possible serial killer, is the stuff of legend.
So to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Mess we bring you Part 1 (of 7) of Red Letter Media’s review of The Phantom Menace. Be sure to watch all 90 minutes, serious there is a serious amount of bashing here but trust us it is all pure gold! Happy Monday y’all.
