I was thinking about this today watching George Floyd’s brother give testimony to congress on the worth of black lives this morning.
Get rid of the STUPID and ARCHAIC practice of standing for national anthems at pro sporting events completely.
I love living in Canada and still find anthems prior to games unnecessary and divisional especially in pro sports. If it’s the WC of Hockey or international competition, for sure. But pro sports? Why?
Holy snikees. I have been saying that for years. Stop with the national anthems before the games. Its the worst in the nhl when they have to play both of them…!

We stand for the anthem out of pride which for Canadian’s, isn’t that much of a sacrifice. Generally, we’re proud of our country and what it stands for on the global stage and the sacrifices made by our military dead. But how the fuck is an American supposed to proud of what their country has become and as a result, what that flag stands for?
Their president and his military beat and shoots his own citizens when they get out of hand. Their economy is in the hands of about 100 greedy old fucks who care more about protecting the valuation of their companies than human life and keep those lives in check with the false perception of national pride built on slavery and mistreatment of minorities. It’s FULL of coronavirus, they refuse to ban an anti-lynching bill and they can’t stop killing black people one of whom was begging for the lives of black people today on TV.
Not a lot to stand for.
“I’m here to ask you to make it stop,” George Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, pleaded with Congress on Wednesday at a House committee hearing to address police brutality and systemic racism. “Stop the pain.”

Trump made clear today which flag he stands with. The one that stands for failure, disunion, and oppression. #AmericaOrTrump

Here’s why we have anthems
Anthems at sporting events are a ‘wartime measure’ brought in during the second and first WWs to pay tribute to the players from teams who went overseas to fight. Much like taxes, this wartime tradition stuck around way longer than intended.
Most of the owners in professional sports are old rich white guys who’ve financially benefitted from their inherently colonial perspective so they’re in no rush to empower change. They’re all threatened by change and the work involved in re-educating themselves so, we get to waste 10 minutes before every game while watching military airplanes fly over stadiums while listening to a 12-year-old girl or fat opera guy sing ‘Oh, Canada’ or ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. All of those white, rigid owners have made that their rallying cry against Colin Kaepernick and other players who don’t pledge allegiance to a flag that represents the senseless mistreatment of blacks and minorities.
Things President Trump is against:
– changing Confederate names of U.S. Army bases
– removing Confederate statues and monuments
– athletes silently protesting police brutality and racial injustice
– putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill

In my opinion, if you want to get rid of all the impending awkward moments, ALL professional sports should deep-six the National Anthem, stat. Like, yesterday.
That’s where the Nationalist arguments and the impending conflict starts and stops. The racialization of patriotism stops. The weaponizing of nationalism stops. Enjoying the game because you want to watch the game, starts.
I’m not there to observe some national pre-game propaganda.
I’m there to watch the fucking game BUT if I’m asked to stand for our anthem I will. I’m not singing, though. Fuck that.
Just get rid of anthems. Now they’re just a waste of everyone’s time.
