You can’t really explain last night’s 3 goal comeback in 3 minutes other than fate. Like I said post-game yesterday, this isn’t supposed to happen. This series has been so fucking weird and hard to watch because the hockey gods are deciding who wins or loses these games, not the players.
Two nights ago the Leafs blew a three dick lead and last night it was Columbus’s turn and none of it would have happened if former superstar now 4th liner Jason Spezza didn’t sacrifice his 38-year-old face down 2-0 in the second.
If they win this series, it’ll be because a 38-year-old former superstar chucked knucks despite getting 7 minutes a game. Selfless hockey, kids.

It took an entire period to respond but they did and no one was happier about it than Spezza who needs a statue on Legends row if the Leafs make it out of the qualifying round.
Spezza has been disrespected all year. He was a healthy scratch opening night with dozens of family in attendance and was miscast and used sparingly on the 3rd and fourth lines for most of the year. He didn’t sulk or pull a Cespedes, he just went out there with 6 minutes left in the second and beat on Dean Kukan because that’s how you do that.
Watch Spezza’s reaction after being nailed to the bench for the rest of the third and OT. It’s the kind of reaction you’d see from a player who played 30 mins.
Spezza plays for the right reasons and this team could use a fucking identity like this right now.

And look at Spezza’s face here as he dry humps Matthews after burying the OT winner w 6:50 left in OT. That’s ma man who LOVES the game and everything that comes with the experience. That’s a professional hockey player who plays for ‘we’ not ‘me’. That’s a man among boys who’s presence and sacrifice yesterday were more compelling and telling than anyone of the 4 unanswered goals the Leafs scored including the OT howie from Matthews.
While the rest of Leaf nation blow Marner, Matthews, and Tavares, Jason Spezza is the reason Leaf psychos have a reason to live today so pay the man some respects. Spezza’s had the most impactful TOI (10 minutes) of any Leaf skater yesterday and if they go on to win the series, that’s what I’ll remember. A bonafide NHL superstar past his prime offer his face as a sacrifice to the hockey gods for just one more game.

Find a way to inject that same desire into Willy Nylander, buy Martin, and Ceci a plane ticket to Saskatchewan, and the Leafs might see the second round.
Have a great weekend Fockers.
