Source: A spin studio that public health officials say followed all Covid-19 protocols is now reporting 61 positive cases of Covid-19, and as many as 100 staff, clients, and family members may have been exposed.
SPINCO, in Hamilton, Ontario, just reopened in July and had all of the right protocols in place, including screening of staff and attendees, tracking all those in attendance at each class, masking before and after classes, laundering towels, and cleaning the rooms within 30 minutes of a complete class, said Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health, in a statement.
But it still wasn’t enough.
Public health officials are very concerned about the number of cases and the size of the outbreak, especially because the city is not currently a hotspot and the facility was not ignoring health protocols
I highlighted the portions of this super spreader story we’re going to focus on as a common-sense exercise.
47 cases of COVID-19 have now been linked to an outbreak at a Hamilton spin studio. Public health authorities reported 38 primary cases — 36 patrons and 2 staff — connected to SPINCO as of today, along with 9 secondary ‘household spread’ cases. https://t.co/orqFvNis8A

‘The city is not currently a hotspot and the facility was not ignoring health protocols’
Look, because you’re not in a hotspot doesn’t mean you’re fucking immune to contracting Coronavirus. Jesus. How many times do you have to hear ‘wear a mask at all times when in large, strange groups of people’? We’ve only been told the most effective way of steering clear of COVID19 200 million times over the last 8 months. It’s not like there’s a magic bubble wherever you go preventing you from getting sick and if there was a magic roving COVID free bubble, it’s not at a goddamned maskless spin class with 30 other strangers.
Apparently there was a frenzy on Spinco’s Insta statement. I’m told 100s of negative comments were removed, then commenting disabled. This instructor’s mom (I am told) seems to blame a client for the 1st case. Hard to blame if they were asymptomatic & the studio was open, tho. pic.twitter.com/bxjq38Jj0I

Removing your mask to work out next to a stranger is like wearing a condom for everything except the sex. It’s mind-numbingly pointless.
As much of an asshole as I am when it comes to trusting others (I don’t…It’s a judgment call based on life experience) assuming the moron next to you is virus-free because you have a deep-seated need to ride a stationary bike in a closed space during a pandemic means you’re really fucking stupid. Putting your wants ahead of your family’s health NEEDS is selfish and operating a maskless spin class in the middle of a pandemic, even if you ‘followed protocol’ is pure stupidity. Because we’re allowed to take our masks off in the gym doesn’t mean you should even if you’re allowed. It’s a bad practice in a room full of heavy breathing, frothing, screaming weirdoes on a bike ride to nowhere.
SpinCo member says owners did ‘everything right’ to keep #HamOnt patrons safe from #COVID19 and that riders knew the risk. She says super spreader event could have happened anywhere. Story by @fallonhewitt_ https://t.co/OPqTly51jm via @thespec

Being in a customer service related industry sucks ass right now and I get that. I feel for the Spinco owners and employees who did their best. What sucks more is unwittingly facilitating the possible death of 61 – now 72 people, when you followed all the rules.
So apply some critical thinking and wear that mask everywhere you find yourself in a group of strangers. Just because you can take off your mask doesn’t mean you should. Because you’re allowed to take it off doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. And stay away from Spin and Zoomba classes for a few more months. Get drunk in your backyard and smoke in your car if you like. Just don’t attend a jammed spin class.
Or go, I don’t really care anymore. If you don’t care, I don’t care and the rest will take care of itself.
