If you’re like me, a red-blooded, kale and chicken eating Canadian kid; you probably enjoy a good old fashioned dust-up with your serving of hockey. You like a dash of donnybrook with your plate of puck. Unfortunately for people like us, the NHL has all but abandoned the fisticuffs for something it calls ‘a better on ice product’ whatever the hell that means Gary.
Gone are the days where Stu Grimson would fight Bob Probert three times a game.
Nights where Rob Ray would end up half naked getting punched in the face by Tie Domi are but a memory now. Colton Orr destroying Milan Lucic lives only on YouTube these days. I remember when the Bay Street Bullies had Tie Domi, Shayne Corson, Wade Belak, Darcy Tucker, Brian McCabe waiting on the bench at all times. I remember when the Mid 90’s Canucks had Donald Brashear, Gino Odjick, Steve Staois, Chris McAllister, Brad May and Scott Walker all on the same goddam team! Now, the Leafs toughest guy might still be Brendan Shanahan.
Listen, Im by no means here to get into a debate about whether the disappearance of fighting in the NHL is a good or a bad thing as that is a very long and hard conversation to have.
Instead I’m here to bring you an awesome scrap from the good old days, every Friday. Capeche?
So, to you good reader I present the inaugural Friday fight from my all time favourite Toronto Maple Leaf, Wendel Clark.
WENDEL CLARK VS. BOB PROBERT ROUNDS 1 AND 2
I have to give round 1 to Wendel, and Round 2 barely to Big Bob. Christ I miss these guys. I also miss Harry Neale and Joe Bowen in the same booth…those two were magic.
Anyway, look for a new tilt every Friday and feel free to leave suggestions in the comments below.
Tuck that chin in and happy chuckin’
