Until you can confidently define what success means to you, your career is going to be in flux.
Where do you see yourself in five years? How easy can you answer that question? If you have solid career goals, you should be able to answer the question rather easily. If you’re somebody who struggles to answer that question, it’s time to start defining your career goals.
During my time as an employment counselor I spoke to many clients who were dead set on advancing their career. Whether they were employed or looking for a job, they knew they wanted more than they had in the past. The problem that most people run into is, they don’t know what they want or where they want to be.
Before you can start thinking about advancing your career, you have to determine what motivates you. Are you motivated by money, power, location, position, work/life balance? What makes you want to get up in the morning, and go to work?
In the video below I discuss how defining success will allow you to figure out what motivates you. Once you figure out what motivates you, you’ll be able to create your career roadmap. Until then, you’re just driving with no final destination insight.
