Source – Matthew James Phelps, 27, called 911 late Friday night saying that he awoke and found his wife, 29-year-old Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps bleeding from multiple stab wounds.
“I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it. I can’t believe this,” said Matthew Phelps, who later told police he’d taken an over-the-counter cold remedy to fall asleep, then had a “weird dream” in which he stabbed his wife, but said he remembers nothing of the attack.
The Raleigh Police Department said Lauren Phelps was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries.
“He qualifies that, yes it does look like I did kill her. The knife is here. I have blood all over me,” said ABC News contributor Brad Garrett to WSOC. “However, this medicine made me do it. That’s not an uncommon way for people in his position to respond.”

He’s absolutely correct about one thing, it probably does look like he killed his wife so he gets some points for honesty.
This should take about 30 seconds for the hot shot detectives in Raleigh to piece the whole thing together but i’ll give it a shot.
- Matthew is addicted to cold medication
- His young wife probably questioned why he was drinking it every night before bed.
- He wanted his sizzurp and wanted it now
- She refused to let him drink it
- he stabbed the shit out of her and blamed the cold meds
I’ve taken cold medication 1000 times and it does one thing and one thing only. Drowsy or non-drowsy I’m out like strikes in 20 minutes after taking it so forgive me if I dont believe the “Nyquil made him do it” bit.
You have to be an idiot to be a pastor so I’m assuming the idiocy explains his blaming cough meds as the reason he cut his wife up.
If his cold meds/legal defense works, I’m sure we will see a bunch of cold and flu related homicides in the near future.
