Remember when ESPN fired you for a DUI during a terrible personal time in your life and then the head of ESPN just left to deal with serious coke addiction. John Skipper? I know that’s whataboutism, but that’s fun whataboutism.
Today we announced Matthew Barnaby has agreed to join DeanBlundell.com because I’m smart.
Just kidding. Sort of. Since we’re relaunching the blog, Daren and I wanted to bring more to what we are doing. I emailed Barnaby and he called me 6 hours later because he was doing his quads at the gym. We talked for about 20 minutes. He sounded interested. I was amazed he was interested so I sent him a business plan (we have a real one because the Nvision guys basically wouldn’t do business with us if we didn’t.)
The Blog made me think about bringing more guys who love doing content together to build an ecosystem around guys who’ve played the game or been a national hockey broadcaster for twenty years and I’ve done some radio. We have all been paid or get paid to offer opinions on shit we like to talk about. Good news: I like talking about stuff like self-worth, and how much would it take to get Daren to partake in a dutch rudder.
I worked with Barnes at The Fan and we had a blast. The second most shit I was ever in at The Fan, was when I asked Matthew who the biggest pussy in the league was. I forget who he said it was, but Scott Moore called me and told me we don’t say “Pussy” and to not tell bloggers to ‘drink motor oil.’ Fact.
Barnaby had issues. I hate when people say “everyone has issues” because that’s easy. It’s hard to be a good-looking former NHL’r who was arrested for kicking a garage door then charged with domestic assault. Didn’t matter Barnaby didn’t hit anyone. It didn’t matter, Barnes (who admits to overreacting) ex’s boyfriend just told him on the phone he looked forward to tucking his kids in. He kicked a garage door. That’s it. Ask his ex before you tweet “That’s what they all say”.
Sure he got wasted and drove for 5 miles on 3 rims and got popped for DWI and he admitted it was stupid. Dumbest thing he’s ever done and he’s never done it since. He firmly stands on his deal and he’s accountable. All good right?

Not so fast. Barnaby is an outstanding broadcaster and smart, smart, hockey guy. He’s a big personality and a lot of fun to be around and work with. I love the guy. He’s one of those guys you see every 2 years who smiles and hugs you first.
Barnaby has sort of been frozen out of the job he loves. Media and hockey. Deanblundell.com needs really good guys who love what we do and no one can tell a story like Barnes. Millard and I talked to him on the Podcast today and he is still such a weapon, and easily the most honest guy I have EVER talked to. You have to listen to the interview below.
He talks about the worst chirp ever. Like the worst. So bad he had to do the tough guy walk of shame to apologize. Everything I heard in that podcast was exactly why we begged Barnaby to part of what we’re doing.
Sweet Pocket Square
His first post is incredible. He pulled down his pants and told the world he’s just as flawed as everyone else. Let’s get over it. He’s an unbelievable hockey guy who wants to blog/Podcast about weird shit, hockey, NY Jets, Roadkill and his overachieving kids. He wants to tell you what players really mean when they say dumb shit and what really happens on the road. It’s the underlying reason you listen to guys like him so it makes sense to me we let him be him. And I love him.
