When it comes to odds on which NHL player will capture the Hart Memorial Trophy in the 2018-19 campaign, oddsmakers are unanimous on the front-runner. Connor McDavid is the clear +333 favorite to hoist the hardware for the second time in his career, but there’s no shortage of value available on the board after him.
Taylor Hall has +1800 odds to win the Hart for the second year in a row.
After the Edmonton Oilers superstar is Sidney Crosby (+650), John Tavares (+1000), Auston Matthews (+1000), Alexander Ovechkin (+1100), Mark Scheifele (+1500), Nikita Kucherov (+1500), Nathan MacKinnon (+1500), Taylor Hall (+1600) and Evgeni Malkin (+1800).
The award, which is given to the player judged to be most valuable to his team, is one of the most esteemed individual honors in hockey. MacKinnon, Hall and Anze Kopitar were chosen as the finalists for the Hart last season, with Hall getting crowned the winner at the 2018 NHL Awards in June. Kopitar has a +1800 shot to win the award for the first time in his career in 2019.
Can anyone catch McDavid?
After an impressive 2016-17 season, the Oilers took a turn for the worse last year and failed to make the playoffs due to an underwhelming 36-40-6 SU record. Edmonton is loaded with talent up front but had some major issues in net last season. If they can get back on track in that regard, they could easily get back to the postseason. If anyone is going to lead them there, it’s McDavid, so expecting him to eclipse his recent 108-point total is realistic.
Don’t sleep on Laine
In terms of long-shot value, one name sticks out to me. Patrik Laine at +3000 is an excellent choice, in my opinion. The Finnish sniper potted 44 goals and finished with 70 points in 2017-18 in only his second season in the NHL. At 20, Laine has already elevated himself into the upper echelon of the league in terms of goal scorers, and the Jets look like a serious Stanley Cup contender.
