Leave it to the Cowboys to Cowboy themselves in the postseason. It’s not just about the Cowboys losing, it’s how they lost. It’s like Dallas finds a new and creative way to eliminate themselves in the postseason. NFL fans were witness to one of the wackiest endings to a playoff game we’ve ever seen. Just when it seemed like the 49ers were going to let the Cowboys comeback and win – Insanity happened.
Kevin Seifert of TSN broke down what happened on the last play of the game when Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott spiked the ball with no time left on the clock. Seifert also breaks down that despite Cowboy fans being upset with the referees, the officials did nothing wrong.
“What happened: The clock ran out as the Cowboys attempted to snap the ball from the 49ers’ 24-yard line on the final play of the game.
How it was resolved: Referee Alex Kemp declared the game over, even after the snap was delayed for umpire Ramon George to adjust the spot.
Analysis: Kemp and George did their jobs. With 14 seconds remaining, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had run for 17 yards on a designed draw. Usually in that situation, NFL players are advised to hand the ball directly to the umpire or another official to expedite spotting of the ball. By rule, there can’t be a snap until an official has touched the ball to confirm and/or adjust the spot.”
Away from the crazy ending, the Cowboys blew a prime opportunity this season. Jerry Jones has drafted well and spent a ton of money to build a great team. Dak Prescott is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL & they have a stacked offense. The Cowboys have a strong run game, passing game, and solid defense. Even if the referee was slow to spot the football on the last play, Jerry Jones is sick over the loss.
So are Cowboys fans.

Alex Chippin of the Score reports, Jones was sick after the loss.
“The hump is advancing in the playoffs,” Jones said after the Cowboys’ 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken. “There’s been some good quarterbacks that haven’t advanced in the playoffs. I’m just sick we’re one of them – really sick. I’m surprised and sick.”
“When you get this combination of players together, you need to have success,” Jones said, courtesy of The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Because we all know how it goes in the NFL – the whole thing is set up to take away from the best and add to the ones who need improving. And personnel-wise, I think we had one of the best.”
Jones declined to address questions about Mike McCarthy’s job security as head coach, saying, “I don’t even want to discuss anything like that at this particular time.”
As good as the Cowboys were this season, since the 1990’s the Cowboys and the playoffs just don’t play well together. On Friday’s episode of ‘Talkin Football With Ray’, I predicted that Dallas was going to lose. I don’t believe in curses, but if any team was going to blow a playoff game I knew it was going to be the Cowboys. The Cowboys have some big free agents coming up & clearly Mike McCarthy’s job security could be at risk.
I guess all we can ask is – How bout em?
