How much more leash will MLSE give Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas?
On the newest episode of Ray’s Sports Rant, I interviewed Griff Bordignon to talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs. We hit on a bunch of different interesting topics. Griff compared the NHL preseason to the NFL and explained why there’s more interest in football exhibition games than in hockey. After countless postseason disappointments, I asked Griff what Griff’s expectations are for the Leafs this upcoming season. Despite having one of the best rosters in the NHL and the best player to ever play for Toronto, the Leafs have played on the goaltender carousel the last four seasons. I asked Griff how much more leash MLSE will give Kyle Dubas.
Expectations are through the roof for the Leafs this season. Leaf fans are cautious after the recent playoff woes. What are your expectations for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season?
It’s hard to expect this Leafs season because it’s been rinse and repeat for five years. It’s hard to go into a season knowing they will get over 100 points, and then it’s seven games to determine the mental health of Leaf’s fans. So to answer the question, I have no expectations because it’s what I have to do, and it won’t hurt me if they once again can’t win in the first round.
I’m not a Leaf fan. I’m not even really a hockey fan. But if I were, I’d be at my breaking point after all the postseason disappointment. As optimistic as some Leafs fans have been, I’ve also read many pessimistic comments. A dude on Facebook wrote: “Kyle Dubas must be fired so they can put a competent GM in place who has hockey knowledge!!!”. There’s a lot of frustration among Maple Leafs fans. How much more leash is MLSE going to give Kyle Dubas before they have to let him go?
Kyle Dubas won’t be fired. I said MLSE would let him walk with his contract being in the last year of his deal. It leaves no blood on their hands and avoids what would be a PR shit show, Shanahan is the puppet master in this whole organization, and until he’s dealt with, Kyle will be dealt with as well.

The NHL preseason is upon us. NFL fans treat the preseason for their favorite teams like it’s the start of the regular season. How does the NHL preseason compare to the NFL preseason?
The NFL preseason is a much bigger deal than the NHL’s; rookies are the main things to look for in the NHL preseason. While they may not be drafted right away rookies, it’s the guys who have developed in the minor leagues, college, or overseas. You look to see who will help give your roster a needed jolt at the bottom of the lineup and how the guys at the top have improved this offseason.
