In the 2019-2020 season, there were 970 players to play in an NHL game. Of those 970 players, 413 were Canadian. That’s 42.5% of the NHL is made up of Canadian players, not to mention that the province of Ontario is where the majority of the players are from. Why am I telling you this? I’m telling you this because up here in Ontario, running into a disgruntled NHL player is as common as Pats making an awful deal in our fantasy league.
We are NOT hockey “insiders”, but what we have for you Leaf fans today is not only juicy, but sad AF if you’re a true Leaf fan. A mutual friend has become chummy with a Toronto Maple Leaf player from the 2019-2020 season. This player said and I quote, “The Leafs will NEVER win a cup with Matthews, Marner and Nylander. They’re just a bunch of brats who lack passion to win and don’t really care when they lose. They’re more concerned with getting on their phones to coordinate where they’re going after the game.”
He also mentioned that a certain key player “wants out and won’t sign extension if offered”. He said “Keefe is a pushover and afraid of upsetting the big money kids and that everyone is afraid to speak up to them in fear of getting ousted”. He said “The bubble was awful and the kids just played video games and acted like they were on vacation”.

Tough to say. You referenced one very key thing here, pointing out they are kids.
“Kids” have a tendency to win when surrounded by proven veterans. These kids have never had the luxury of that with the exception of Patrick Marleau and Ron Hainsey.
A core leadership group teaches the newcomers what it means to be part of their group, shows what it takes to win and leads by example.
To shake things up, signing a guy like Tavares wasn’t the answer. That avoided the “Shanaplan” all together.
This team will never win until the players decide winning is a pretty special thing and winning in a Toronto is a whole different lifetime animal then winning in Tampa Bay.

This is also a sign of the times. That generation plays video games a lot. Its well known across pro sports that young athletes spend their free time playing video games. Especially in a bubble where they were trapped in a hotel 24/7. I also didn’t see many games where Matthews was a passenger. Kinda hard to score 47 goals without determination. Even Nylander scored 30 and had his best season.
