Honesty is the best policy, so allow me to be completely honest and say that I have barely watched the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, and when I have, it’s been to laugh at their misfortune. That Lightning game was a fucking beaut.
Love ya Stammer, but anyways…
My point is that I am merely breaking down some numbers and as Jay-Z once famously said: men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.
And he’s mostly right. Numbers don’t lie…but they can be deceiving.
For instance, Mitch Marner’s regular season has him sitting at 18 games played with 4 goals and 14 assists, and a -2 to show for his efforts. Averaging a point per game in the NHL is no small feat and should not be scoffed at. However, when you’re the highest-paid player in the league this season and provided the most annoying narrative of the entire summer – you get the microscope, buddy.
Mo’ money mo’ problems.
Mitch Marner has played 4 games this season in which you could argue that he looked like a superstar – and let’s be very clear – anything less than superstar-level play is completely unacceptable from a player of his pay grade.
Take a look at his game logs, courtesy of NHL.com, I’ve put the good games in bold and italics.

So in those 4 games, Marner’s stat line was:
4 GP: 3 goals, 7 assists, +7
In the other 13 games (not including last night):
13 GP: 1 goal, 7 assists, -9
I realize you can’t have your “A” game every single night…but dude barely even has a shot on net in his last few games. If he had even just 2 or 3 more multi-point games, I wouldn’t have even considered writing this, as there are many star players that run hot and cold…but 4 out of 17 games and a MINUS 9 is simply unacceptable. I originally noticed his empty stats after the second Bruins game this season, but I left it to see if he would either start playing better and make me look stupid, or continue to stink it up most games and validate my point. Considering the fact that this is published should be confirmation that not only has he continued to underperform, but I think he’s actually getting worse.
The injury couldn’t come at a better time, as the team is a complete mess, and has been ever since the Nylander deal. Their only saving grace was hopefully being the best team in hockey, and guess what goofy? They’re not even close. Furthermore, their current cap situation is literally one of the biggest jokes in the history of pro sports.
Oh, sorry. When I said the injury couldn’t have come at a better time, I didn’t mean for Mitch, I meant for the team. Watch how well they play without the biggest problem in the locker room.
