In my life, I have never seen the official charity arm of a pro sports team, fire that pro sports team. Ever.
Then, there are the Ottawa Senators.
There are dumpster fires then there are ‘abandon ship’ fires. When the namesake charity associated with an NHL club decides to fire the NHL club responsible for funding that charity, that’s an ‘abandon ship’ fire.
The REALLY funny part of this developing story? The Official Sens Twitter account posted the notice without the Ottawa Senators knowing they were going to post it.
NEWS RELEASE – Statement Regarding the Agreement Between the Ottawa Senators Foundation and Capital Sports & Entertainment Inc.https://t.co/WoDcl96ABR
— Ottawa Senators Foundation (@sensfoundation) June 4, 2020
Radio. Silence.
It’s actually quite stunning.
RUMOR is owner Eugene Melnyk hasn’t lived up to many promises he’s made to the Sens Foundation. He’s neck-deep in debt which would surprise no one after Casino’s and Private Jet companies started publically shaming Melnyk last year to pay his bills and outstanding debt in the millions.
No matter the impetus, being fired by their official charity in a time when charitable giving is down 98% in Canada is another brick in the embarrassing wall of perpetual shame Melnyk has built around a once-proud franchise.
Had someone not given Melnyk half their liver a few years ago, none of this would have happened, btw.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, Be careful who you donate organs too.
Despite what the media wishes for us to believe not everyone is on board with woke culture. If Melnyk was not happy with his club being associated with groups like Black Lives Matter then so be it.
All us Sens fans can hope for is that he completely goes bust with no more tricks to keep the club and will have to sell to a nice billionaire that actually gives a damn and will keep the club in Ottawa. We can dream right?
