Today on the Podcast, G and I were talking about Johan Franzen’s recent admission of depression and PTSD he suffered through at the hands former Leafs Head Coach, Mike Babcock.
I started to wonder where Brendan has been since these confirmed Babcock abuse allegations have surfaced. We didn’t hear from him after the Marner story surfaced, instead, we got a steady diet of confirmed reports that it happened from players. Nothing from Dubas and nothing from Shanahan.
It slipped our minds at the time because we were all taken back by the shock of how much of a nuclear dick he was to players, but now I’m having a hard time squaring Brendan Shanahan’s role in this. Hear me out before you get unreasonably angry:
1. Shanahan played for Mike Babcock in 05/06. I have reasonable doubt Shanahan didn’t know what Babcock was capable of doing to another human being, or ‘never saw that stuff’.
2. Shanahan employed Mike Babcock for 4 years. I have reasonable doubt Shanahan didn’t know what Babcock did you a 19-year-old Mitch Marner.
3. Shanahan’s reason for firing Mike Babcock was standard bullshit hockey firing excuses blaming poor performance and attention to detail. That’s not true. Even Johan Franzen (whose life Babcock ruined) said Babcock is the best at being prepared down to the last detail so I call bullshit.
“We know how competitive the league is and we know how difficult it is each and every night,” he told reporters. “When you think that you know what the right decision is you have to act on it. I think that waiting at this point would have just been the wrong thing.”
Shanahan called what’s been missing from the team, currently amid a six-game losing streak, “the magic question” and said the “key elements” of Toronto’s game have gone missing in action.
“We’re mistake-prone on defense, the attention to detail is not there,” he said. “Even the explosive offense our team was known for has been missing for a while now.”
4. We haven’t heard from Shanahan since the firing. He has said nothing about the Mitch Marner List. He’s been absent on the abuse allegations in Detroit too and it dawned on me today after we started to talk about Franzen that Brendan Shanahan has been a fucken GHOST.
He knows everything bout Babcock as a player and his boss and is the one responsible for hiring him and claimed to know him intimately as a coach so when do we start asking him what he knows?
If he knew about The Marner List incident in year one, why didn’t he do anything for three more?
What else did Babcock do that was sanctioned by nonaction?
Does anyone start asking if Brendan Shanahan should be included in the hatred we’re piling on Mike Babcock (which I like btw) after his abusive behavior surfaced?
No, and Brendan’s dodging bullets right now because of it.
Don’t expect anyone of significance to start asking anytime soon, btw. They all own part of the team.

I know Brendan didn’t abuse anyone here and I’m not saying he did but it sure looks like he allowed it continue and that’s something that should be addressed.
Much like his hair in 94.
