So it’s coming up fast, the Tokyo 2020/2021 Olympics are right around the corner. I was chatting with a rower on Team Canada, Christine Roper OLY, saying how this will be the strangest Olympics to date with all the COIVD-19 protocols in place. Roper is now in Tokyo, before she left I asked her what she’s telling the first timers, athletes that have never gone to an Olympics before.
Her answer made me adore Canadian athletes even more, she said you have to look at it as a one off, as an athlete you’ll look back and be able to say you went to the Tokyo Games.
When you say the Tokyo Games they will be the Games people will talk about; the Games that were postponed due to a fricking pandemic, the Games that almost didn’t happen, the Games that had minimal or no spectators. The Games where all athletes had things shoved up their noses daily know as COVID testing, everyone will remember the Tokyo Olympic Games! This is all considering they do go ahead. I’m pretty sure they are, as of July 15, 2021.
Some athletes are already over there, training preparing, getting used to the time change. A lot goes into be in an Olympic athlete. I’ve been to my fair share as an athlete and as a staff member and I decided to check in with a couple athletes before they headed to Tokyo to compete.
There are some new sports being introduced to the Olympics this summer so you might want to catch up on Series IV of DROPPING IN with Mercedes to learn more!
