After dominating preseason and Stanley Cup expectations, things have not been easy for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
There were so many conversations heading into the 2022/2023 NHL season, and all of them had the Leafs on cruise control. Now that the puck has dropped for real, it’s fair to say things haven’t been easy for the Stanley Cup favourites.
Away from inconsistent goaltending, it seems the rest of the lineup is still trying to shake off the rust. Turnovers and mistakes are too frequent. Back-checking is lazy, and there’s been no commitment to getting dirty in front of the net.
Four games into the season, there’s no reason to hit the panic button. However, we must acknowledge that things haven’t been great for Toronto. You want to see a team like the Leafs give maximum effort but make it look easy. Nothing has been straightforward about this season so far. The Leafs seem to have to work extra hard only to be let down by a mistake or a bad goal.
What’s gone wrong? Why are the Leafs struggling to dominate teams that should have no chance to beat Toronto?
