The Retrograde Podcast – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
It’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater this week on The Retrograde!
Andrew and Mikey throw on our tank tops and turn up the Ska with a look back at one of gaming’s biggest trend setters from the 90’s.
We also take some time to discuss the Overwatch World Cup, gush over Captain Marvel, and question why Venom is being made!
What is the difference between an Amateur and a Professional?
In Wrestling, one rolls around on a mat with cauliflower ears and a stiff neck, while the other somersaults off the top rope with ripped biceps and oily pecs.
But not all industries can judge the difference between professional and amateur the same way. In some, it’s a lot less extreme, and simply serves as a defining line drawn between those who are good, and those who are the best.
Andrew, for example, would be an Amateur Podcast host, whereas Mikey, god love him, would be considered a professional.
However, when it comes to skateboarding there’s less of a distinct line between professional and amateur competitions.
You either compete, or you do not.
You can either perform a trick, or you cannot.
Those who can, and who can consistently, are professionals, whereas those who cannot, and fail consistently, are high school dropouts.
What’s to be said about the legacy of a Professional, or “Pro,” Skateboarder, or “Skater?”
Are the heroes of the 90s even comparable to the stars of today?
Are they even better?
While it may be impossible to determine this when it comes to real life skaters, there still exists the digital catalogue of Skateboarding videogames, and in that catalogue, there’s one which stands among them all as a true professional.
Can this game still “kick” it with the best of them, or should we “flip” it the bird and forget about it?
