Huffington Post – Venus Williams stepped out of a Wimbledon news conference in tears Monday after she was asked about a fatal car crash that involved her earlier this month.
The star appeared following her first-round victory against Belgium’s Elise Martens.
“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and ― yeah. I’m completely speechless,” Williams said. Williams was overwhelmed with emotion and stepped out of the press conference, returning later to say she would only answer questions pertaining to tennis.
Days before the tournament, police in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, found Williams “at fault” for failing to yield the right of way to another driver in an intersection. Police say Williams’ SUV was traveling through the intersection at around 5 mph when she collided with the other vehicle.
Lisa Barson, 68, told police she had a green light and Williams cut in front of her. The driver’s 78-year-old husband, Jerome Barson, was in the passenger seat and sustained a head injury. He died two weeks later.
Before the tournament started, Williams addressed the crash on her Facebook page.
Williams has won Wimbledon five times. She’s considered one of the favorites to win this year.
The Spaniard finished as runner-up to the American’s sister, Serena, in this same fixture two years ago but claimed some redemption after sailing to this year’s crown, per the Wimbledon Twitter account:

WHOAH. Tough month for Venus. Killing a guy then losing In the final of the Masters of tennis tournaments. She wasn’t found to be at fault for the death of the 78-year-old but losing 6-0 in the last had to be a real kick in the pants after the events of the last 30 days.
If you asked me which Williams sister would end up killing a guy first, I woulda bet the farm it would have been Serena.
Sad, but is it offside to site the fact the accident doesn’t sound like it was the actual cause of death? If she was going five mph and he died of head injuries, I’m sorry, but he had bigger issues than a slow motion fender bender. At least that’s what I’d be telling Venus Williams, so she doesn’t completely implode.
If you accidentally cause the death of an 80-year-old is it the same as killing a 25-year-old? There seems to be a real “death double standard” here. If Venus had killed a younger person, it would be a major fucking deal. Sad but true that we look at this like the old fellow was playing with house money at 78 and had already lived a long life, so she gets a bit of a pass.
I read today the family is preparing a wrongful death suit. At 78 whats that worth? 30 k? If airlines have dollar amounts attached to lost souls you bet your ass insurance company’s do.
Thoughts and prayers are with the family but if it wasn’t Venus going five mph sounds like a stiff breeze might have done the job.
